Longtime DCU executive editor Dan Didio is indulging his desire to write by way of The Outsiders. Starting in January, Didio and artist Philip Tan will be replacing Peter Tomasi and his various artists on the series, who according to an interview with Newsarama, is getting freed up to work on something big post-Blackest Night. Didio has previously published a few stories here and there in DCU Holiday specials and such, but more recently he penned the Metal Men segment of the just-wrapped Wednesday Comics.
Didio claims he won't be shaking things up too much, but that "one of the things I want do is pick up on some of the threads with Geo-Force that actually started with Brad Meltzer in DC Universe: Last Will and Testament and that Pete has been building on. And we want to expand on those." This is good news for those of us who were waiting for Geo's epic showdown with 'Stroke to be addressed in a way other than a few lines of dialog.
Adding to the creative change-up of course is artist Philip Tan, who is slowly carving out a place for himself in the DCU, first with Final Crisis: Requiem, onto Green Lantern, Batman & Robin, and now The Outsiders. When asked what it's like working with the head honcho of editorial for his employer, Tan said "It's great! I mean, it's hard sometimes because he is so busy. So far, we've already plotted out six to 12 months of story. So we've got a good idea of where we're going."
Regardless of their claims to not shake things up too much in regards to team members and direction, I'd say it's a pretty big deal for the executive editor to be writing a monthly book, particularly amongst his normal everyday duties. Didio is the man, and if anyone can pull it all off, it's him.
