I got into reading JSA at the beginning of the run that preceded this one and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s got to be hard reinvigorating some of the oldest characters in all of comics, but DC really did an admirable job handling these iconic players. Now that DC has successfully (at least in my humble opinion) cleaned house and reorganized things yet again, the JSA is in position to be one of their top tier titles.

In issue 5 the book is dealing with a few of the plot threads that came out of Infinite Crisis, this time surrounding the all new Legion of Superheroes. Sandman (Sanderson ‘Sandy’ Hawkins) has had a vision about the future of the JSA, or so it seems, and now those visions are starting to come to light. Aided by Batman and the new Starman, Sandman investigates the appearances of heroes from the future. The three must get inside Arkham Asylum in order to rescue the Legions ‘Dream Girl’ from the clutches of none other than Dr. Destiny.  At the same time Stargirl, and Cyclone accompany Superman and Red Tornado of the JLA to Superman’s fortress of solitude in the continued search for flight rings belonging to Legion members. For some reason the members of the Legion are stuck in suspended animation until special words are uttered that activates their flight rings.

The artwork of Fernando Pasarin really works in this issue, as he really flexes his muscle in a cool fight scene that features multiple versions of the dark knight vs. our heroes in the halls of Arkham. He has a real classic style that I always feel works best for DC comics, think Butch Guice or even Dan Jurgens on Superman. As always, the book is tightly written by Johns, with great dialogue and a neat character interaction. I think this might be one of DC’s better books in the year to come.
