The Mighty Avengers #13 continues the story of Nick Fury and where he’s been. This issue begins 6 months ago with a disguised Fury (who looks interestingly enough like Samuel L. Jackson…an obvious shout out to the Iron Man movie’s extra scene) sitting on a park bench in Portland, Oregon next to Daisy Johnson. Daisy Johnson, as some of you may recall, was the super-powered S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who assisted Fury throughout the Secret War storyline we mentioned last issue. We find out that she was placed on mandatory retirement following those events and is currently directionless in life. Well, Samuel….er, Nick, reveals that he got her file out of a group of files that he kept hidden and completely separate from everyone else. He tells her that she is but one of many “Caterpillar” kids that he was keeping an eye on and that he wants her to seek out and train a team of them to have a trustworthy countermeasure to the Skrull infiltration, to which she agrees.

She begins with a trip to the Bronx where she picks up the son of Ares, God of war. She fills him in that since he is the son of Ares who is the son of Zeus, that he is Phobos, God of fear. Her next stop is in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she recruits a girl who appears to be able to slingshot herself at super-speed, kinda Jumper meets Flash like. We find out that Rodriguez (the girl’s name) is the daughter of Johnny Horton, The Griffin. Our next stop is Atlanta, Georgia where we meet J.T., who is the grandson of the original Ghost Rider, The Phantom Rider. After a brief visit to mutant town where resident “I know stuff” girl, Layla Miller of X-Factor fame turns Daisy down, we head over to Greenwich Village, New York and are introduced to the son of Doctor Druid. Our final trip on this recruitment drive brings us to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where we meet our final member of the group, Jerry Sledge. They don’t say what his power is but he’s a fairly large, muscular guy so I’m assuming super strength. With the team assembled, we are left, at the end of the issue, with Fury giving a rather depressing speech and with the group about to embark upon training.

So now a new group of players for the side of good are introduced, but will they be enough? Join us next month as we hope to get even more questions answered.
