Welcome back to the book report gang. This week it’s Faces of Evil and Dark Reign with a little Captain America thrown in for good measure. Now, let’s talk comics.
Ms. Marvel #35
This book is pretty cool as it covers the events coming out of Dark Avengers #1. Carol Danvers has a new life and a new identity, but for how long. When the Cult dedicated to Captain Marvel has a mass suicide carol is drawn to the scene where she runs into the new Captain Marvel. He has some seriously earth shattering news for Carol, the fact that the Captain Marvel she thought had returned from the past was actually a Skrull invader. Also a long time enemy of Carols has a new found power and is itching to use it on Ms. Marvel.
Final Analysis: This issue was great as a standalone; it should be interesting to see where this story goes.
The New Avengers #49
Another Dark Reign tie in, this issue finally reunites Luke Cage with his kidnapped daughter. Despite being a bad guy, you have to admire Norman Osborn’s style. This issue further cements Normans role as the grand puba of the Marvel Universe. Also, the stage is set for the inevitable show down between the New Avengers and the Dark Avengers. This book is just starting to heat up.
Final Analysis: Finally, this book is back on track.
Avengers: The Initiative #21
Who the hell knows how much longer this title will be around but damn if it ain’t great. The Thor clone is back in a major way and a lot of things have been explained to my liking concerning Thor-Girl and her diminished powers. Now if the real Thor would please stand up. Look for the new Warriors to make a return in this book as well.
Final Analysis: Just enjoy the ride while it lasts.
Captain America #46
Ed Brubaker’s epic run continues. That’s all I should say, but I’ll add a bit more. Cap and Namor are teaming up to save one of their oldest friends: John Hammond. James is still struggling with the memories of his life as the Winter Soldier and the dark deeds he executed under that guise. This whole arc seems to boil down to the sins of the past. A fun read for any comic fan.
Final Analysis: Get on board one of the best comics to date.
Justice Society America #23
This Faces of Evil tie in features the return of Black Adam to the DC fold. To say Adam is a complex character is a gross understatement, my hat’s off to the writer of this book (Geoff Johns) for difficulty. Isis is also back amongst the living and that’s a bad thing all around. The JSA are trying to rebuild after the Magog debacle and now this? Talk about pressure.
Final Anaysis: Black Adam is back and badder than ever, now if they can only get Billy Batson back to square one in a way that makes sense…
