2. Detective Comics #854 Cover by JH Williams
While it had never really entered into my mind that I wouldn't be buying this book, seeing JH Williams' first cover for his new run on Detective with Greg Rucka certainly hit its mark. Since her debut in 52, DC has promised that Batwoman would get her due, and it is finally happening. Williams' cover sees Batwoman leaping off the page into reader's laps, behind her the smoking wasteland of Gotham that Batman has left behind. The colors here are so bright and contrasting, her ginger hair and black with red outfit popping immensley against the solid white canvas, it immediately draws the eye to this book when it is displayed amongst other titles.
What I really enjoy about this cover is, despite its effectiveness, it really is rather simple. Aside from the bottom portion of the image (which plays its part in adding to the mystique of this new direction for one of DC's oldest titles), there are really only three colors in various shades used here: black, red, and white. Readers that are willing to take a chance after being drawn in by this cover will be happy to find some of the most unique and dynamic panel layouts in modern comics, courtesy of JH Williams.
