The best in comics for 2009.
by Dante Maddox
Dec 29, 2009

Hey gang, how is it going? I hope the holidays are treating you well and that you have a great new year. It’s the end of the year and time again for us to take stock in the year that was. So, in celebration of the year in comics I’m going to share with you my picks for comics of the year based on certain categories. In the end, these are books that I think are worthy of your attention.

The Best Book of 2009

The best book is actually really easy to decide. It comes down to consistency and that special feeling that a good story gives you. It’s about the perfect blend of art and story that culminates into a great piece of work. That book is Invincible. Invincible is perfect to put it mildly. The book features characters that you can really get behind, a depth that some books take years to generate. I’m not going to even bother telling you what Invincible is about, just know that it’s a new twist on an old story. A story that will appeal to almost every comic book reader.

Comeback Character of 2009

A comeback character is a guy or gal that in a nutshell used to kind of suck, or be unimportant. Past winners have been Luke Cage and Booster Gold. This year's hero has had a huge year with one of the best books out there right now. Nova has been around since the early 70’s and never really caught on until the 90’s. Even then however it wasn’t until recently that we realized that Nova had been updated and forever changed. Who would have thought that the way to make a character cooler would be to make him cooler? Confused? Well, I guess you’re going to have to check out Nova in order to see what I mean.

Villain of 2009

Norman Osborn saw his return to the living in arguably one of the lowest points in Marvel Comics history. Who would have thought that Brian Michael Bendis would take the character and make him into one of the more interesting villains of 2009? That’s exactly what we got a villain that proved to be far more complex and horrifying than we thought possible. I’ve contended in the past that Norman was a rather silly villain given his origins, but BMB certainly knew how to manipulate the source material and make use of his insanity in such a way that just made the whole show feel natural. Look out, Lex Luthor.
