War of Kings #2
Marvel's space project goes full throttle.
by Dante Maddox Apr 02, 2009
The galaxy hasn’t been a quite place in the Marvel universe for a long time now. The events of War of Kings can be traced back to Annihilation a story almost two years old. New books like Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy have flourished during this time and have really helped drum up momentum for War of Kings. With the second issue coming out yesterday let’s look at the various players involved in the story and what they are up to.
Havok and The Starjammers
Space Pirates. The only thing cooler then ninja’s are space pirates or space ninja’s. The Starjammers are a group of heroic rebel space pirates making them extra cool, add to them a group of familiar faces from X-Factor and you have the all new, all different Starjammers.
Their role:
The Starjammers are on a twofold mission, a) they have to rescue Lilandra, and b) They must kill Emperor Vulcan, Havoks long lost (but evil) brother. By issue two the team is reeling from the attack by Vulcan on the Imperial wedding of Chrystal and Ronan the Accuser. Rachel Summers has lost her connection to the Phoenix force and Korvas’ sword is on the blink as well. Now the team is going on the offensive and attacking Vulcans fleet directly.
Our best guess:
I heard a rumor the other day that stated that a certain Red Haired X-Man might be making her return during War of Kings. If that is the case, then hold on to your hats!
Lilandra
The former Empress of the Shi’ar Empire has not been having a good time. She’s currently beign held captive by Vulcan who has grown increasingly unstable. When the Kree counter attck and take out a whole fleet of Shi’ar battle cruisers he loses it, and it just may cost Lilandra her life.
Her role:
To bring peace back to the Galaxy. I never really understood how Lilandra worked. As the head of an Empire aren’t you automatically the bad guy? How can the Shi’ar be a benevolent empire? You have to conquer people don’t you? That’s neither here nor there, just a personal gripe of mine.
Our Best Guess:
We have a gut feeling that Lilandra will come out of this unscathed. Or maybe she won’t. The Kree have the Inhumans as their leaders and if that sticks then I’d hope the rest of the galaxy would change as well.
The Inhumans
I know, I know they are an army of super mutants. But above and beyond that they are now the ruling body of the Kree people. This is the best move that Marvel could have made concerning Black Bolt and his people who have been languishing on the moon for far too long.
Their role:
To kick Vulcan’s butt across the galaxy, or at least that is their intention. The Inhumans, lead by Black Bolt, have launched a massive attack with brand new sentinel like robots that can fire off sonic blast similar to those of Black Bolt himself.
Our Best Guess:
The landscape is wide open for the Inhumans, it would be a huge mistake to send them back to the moon after all this, but knowing Marvel they will probably end up right back to where they started.
And that my friend is the rub, the pieces are just about set into place and the next four issues of War of Kings will reshape the galaxy. Come back next time where we’ll look at Darkhawk and the rest of the cast of War of Kings.
