If you read the landmark Annihilation series then you might be familiar with one Peter Quill, better known as Star-Lord. Peter has a long history with Marvel Comics, a history that goes back a surprisingly long amount of time. This week we’ll take a quick look at where the character came from and where he’s going.
The original is still the best
Peter Quill is technically the original Star-Lord, but thanks to some fancy story telling he’s not the first. The first Star-Lord was a man named Jason of Spartex and he was featured in a few stories in the early part of this decade. The other Star-Lord is Sinjin Quarrell and has no connection to the other men to carry the mantle.
Peter Quill by far is the primary Star-Lord when you consider the fact that Jason of Spartex is Quills father. Sinjin was created by Timothy Zahn in the 90’s with no real reference to Quill or Jason of Spartex.
A unique character
Peter Quill is a perfect fit for the Marvel universe, a unique character that comes from unusual beginnings. We’ve already pointed out that Peter’s father was an alien, his mother was an earthling that was forced to give up Peter for adoption.
Peter eventually made his way to NASA which brought him into contact with an entity called the Master of the Sun. From there on Peter Quill would go as Star-Lord equipped with a special gun and a ship all his own. Though the ship would be destroyed in a battle during the Annihilation war.
Guardians of the Galaxy
After the Annihilation affair is over the universe is a very different place. There are anomalies all over space that threaten to tear the universe apart. Peter Quill has just reclaimed his life but now is faced with this new status quo.
With the aid of Adam Warlock, Rocket Raccoon and others Peter forms the Guardians of the Galaxy, technically the first team to carry that name. Currently the team is on the outs after several big revelations, and Peter has been aged considerably.
The Guardians of the Galaxy and Peter Quill represent a resumed commitment to tell great stories that lie outside of the run of the mill Marvel comics universe. Do yourself a favor and check out an issue when you can.
