The Kree and the Skrulls have been the center piece of Marvels space epics for years, all culminating with the Kree Skrull War. Add in the Shi’ar and countless other races and Marvels take on the Universe begins to expand. We saw that expansion in the form of Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest. Still striking while the iron is hot Marvel has presented us with War of Kings.
While I’m technically a Marvel guy, I’ve always looked to DC for really good space stories that weren’t Star Wars (cause nobody does it better than Star Wars). This hasn’t completely changed, after all I think that Blackest Night will be a blockbuster in its own right, but Marvel is definitely vying for my dollars and attention with War of Kings.
The story is complex and deeply woven together, here’s what has happened thus far. The Kree have been claimed by the Inhuman Royal Family, and a wedding to bridge the two people together has been planned. Ronan the Accuser is to wed Crystal of the Inhumans for the sake of the Kree and Kree space. I really appreciate the writers finally giving the Inhumans something to do except guest star in other people’s books and have weird limited series that have little to no impact on the rest of the Marvel U.
At the same time Havok and the Starjammers are fighting desperately to save the Shi’ar and the galaxy from the new Emperor Havoks brother Vulcan. When the Starjammers seek asylum with the Kree all hell breaks loose as the Shi’ar Imperial Guard attack the wedding. Of course you know that this means war.
War of Kings involves more than just the Stajammers and the Shi’ar, there is Nova and the new Corps. to consider, as well as Blastarr and Darkhawk of all people thrown into the mix. The Guardians of the Galaxy are also slated to be thrown into the mix and are currently in the negative zone fighting against Blastarr and his forces. Currently Blastarr is trying to invade earth so the story does hit somewhat closer to home than the last two series did.
This series of books should be on your pull list for several reasons. Firstly it will introduce you to some seriously classic characters like the Starjammers. This series will eventually affect the regular Marvel U in some shape or form, so you should really be there for that. Characters like Havok will continue to grow and evolve as this story progresses. I can also smell a few new titles possibly coming out of this event, Havok and the Starjammers anybody?
Plus I love writing about stuff that makes my spell check go ape sh*t!
With so many players involved in a wide array of ways this series looks promising. Stay tuned to Crave Online for continuing coverage of War of Kings.
