Paul W.S. Anderson doesn't have what one would call a sterling track record as a director. (I got in to see Alien vs. Predator for free, and I still asked for my money back.) But now he's ready to blow up in a big way with Pompeii, an epic historical romance/tragedy in the Titanic mold. Empire Online reports that Anderson's Oscar push will tell the story of a slave who falls in love with his owner's daughter, who is in turn engaged to a corrupt senator. No word yet on whether Dr. Who will be involved. (What? He was there!)
Anderson has never directed a straightforward drama before, and we don't honestly expect him to start now. Pompeii could be a serious tragedy about inevitably, man's hubris or even just the perils of giant volcanoes, but it could just as easily involve Taylor Lautner jumping out of the way of lava flows or Leighton Meester looking rather fine in flowing, translucent togas. Time will tell which direction he chooses to go in. His next film, The Three Musketeers, is set for release later this year.
Crave Online will return with more Pompeii news as it ups the jams.
