Om nom nom!
Artist: DJ Babu
Song: Dearly Departed
DJ Babu is one of the premiere DJs in the world, and not like one of those asshole birthday party DJs like DJ AM, either. More like a legendary battle DJ/super producer, and a full-time member of Dilated Peoples and the Beat Junkies. On “Dearly Departed”, DJ Babu teams with gangster icons M.O.P. to brag about how tough they are or whatever.

Artist: The Primeridian
Song: Takuthere
The Primeridian is an experimental hip hop/R&B group similar to Outkast or the Pharcyde. In fact, the Pharcyde’s own Imani appears on this track, a spacey lounge jam that was scientifically engineered to be the perfect song to listen to whilst hot-boxing your van. You know, the one with the wizard airbrushed on the side of it.

Artist: Dungen
Song: Satt Att Se
Dungen is pretty much the Swedish version of Pink Floyd. I urge you to give them a chance, despite being in Swedish, obviously, “Satt Att Se” is one of the most musically rich songs we’ve heard all year.

Artist: Tom Gabel
Song: Anna Is a Stool Pigeon
You may recognize Tom Gabel as the singer of popular punk band Against Me! You may also recognize his first solo single, “Anna is a Stool Pigeon”, from the radio. And now you may download the song here for free. That was relatively painless now, wasn’t it?
Anna Is a Stool Pigeon
Artist: Japanther
Song: Bumpin' Rap Tapes
Japanther are notable for having one of the sweetest names ever, but also for making some batshit-crazy noise rock. Japanther has hit on a winning combination of experimentation and catchy pop hooks that even the most jaded rock critic would have to begrudgingly appreciate.

Artist: Dillinger Four
Song: A Jingle for the Product
It’s weird that so much good music comes out of Minneapolis, a city that most of the rest of the US (by which I mean California and New York) assumes is relatively unimportant. But here’s another one, the Dillinger Four, an influential punk band that just magically re-appeared after a six year absence with some of the best material they’ve ever done. You’re doing a great job, Minneapolis.

Artist: Warship
Song: Toil
Did you like From Autumn to Ashes? If so, you’ll probably like Warship too, it’s pretty much the same dudes doing the same thing, only heavier. “Toil” is totally metal, with great melodic rhythms intertwined, just as one would expect form these talented young heshers.

Artist: Japanese Motors
Song: Single Fins & Safety Pins
Japanese Motors sound a lot like the Strokes used to sound before they got a record contract and started doing whatever it is that they’re doing now. Which I assure you is actually a very good thing and is probably also why they were immediately signed to the number one hipster label of the day, Vice Records. “Single Fins & Safety Pins” is a fun, lo-fi surf rock song that sticks with you from the very first listen.

Artist: A Place To Bury Strangers
Song: To Fix The Gash In Your Head
While A Place To Bury Strangers is one of the year’s most far-out bands. Their sond is not easy to categorize, as there isn’t really even a name for it. But if I had to, I’d say it’s something like a combination of shoegaze, dance, electronica, darkwave, industrial and good old-fashioned psychedelic rock. Comparisons to Joy Division are probably being thrown around like mashed potatoes at a food fight, and are admittedly quite appropriate.
