Gucci Mane is a man at the height of his career. He just put out a new video for "Spotlight" featuring none other than Usher, and his level of output is unprecedented. Hell, the man put out four mixtapes in the last two months. All of that positive momentum wasn't enough to stop Johnny Law from pounding down his door, however, as Mane was just sentenced to a year in prison.
Gucci's sentence is the result of a probation violation charge. He pleaded guilty to assault in 2005 for attacking a nightclub promoter and was sentenced last September to a year in jail for failing to fulfill his court-ordered 600 hours of community service in the case. He went to jail and served until March when, upon his release, Gucci went straight to the studio and recorded five songs.
It's unclear yet how his sentence will affect his forthcoming album The State Vs. Radric Davis, scheduled for a December 8 release on Asylum/Warner Bros.
"It was a challenge for me," he told MTV News in March about going to jail. "I'm just happy my team kept my music going strong for me. And I'm happy I recorded so many records so people could hear me."
It's bad timing all the way for the rapper, who's been having stellar success in his crossover bid from the streets to the mainstream. This year alone, Gucci has appeared on tracks for the Black Eyed Peas, Mario, Omarion, Mariah Carey and even a 50 Cent song. "Spotlight," his current single with Usher, follows hot on the heels of the highly-regarded "Wasted" featuring Plies.
Will he get to bunk with Lil' Wayne?
