Jay-Z did his part to honor the fallen heroes of 9/11 in classic Hov style, performing a marathon star-studded set before a sold-out audience at the theater at Madison Square Garden Saturday for his “Answer the Call” concert.
The show kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance and “The Star-Spangled Banner,” followed by a two-hour set that ran through more than 30 songs, spanning Jay-Z’s 11 albums.
When portraits of the 9/11 victims appeared behind the stage on the big screen as Jay-Z’s “Young Forever” played, Jay told the crowd to “Make some noise for everybody that lost their lives so we can live ours.” Appropriately, the entire stadium trembled with the roaring cheers for those lost in the most harrowing tragedy this nation has experienced in the last hundred years.
“We're celebrating life tonight, we having a good time,” Jay-Z told the audience, “But let’s not forget in 2001 when the first Blueprint came out terrorists attacked New York. They thought they would weaken us. They were sadly mistaken. We stand here even stronger. This is our town. We run New York City. We run this town.”
In addition to playing a slew of new material Jay-Z enlisted a jaw-dropping list of guests and collaborators to help him commemorate the moment, including Kid Cudi, Justin Timberlake, John Mayer, Beyonce, Kanye, Diddy, Santigold, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna — in her first official performance since getting bashed up by Chris Brown earlier this year.
Hova made it look easy to walk the difficult balance of honoring the cause and creating a truly historic performance, something he's earned quite a reputation for in the Big Apple.
The show was simulcast live and commercial-free on Fuse TV, kicking off MSG’s Absolut Concert series.
