While a lineup announcement for this year's Lollapalooza isn't expected for several weeks, one secret was apparently too big to keep: Pearl Jam has been booked as headliners for this year's festival, which will take place August 3-5 in Chicago’s Grant Park.
Lame DJ and occasional Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell first organized Lollapalooza in 1991 as a hedonistic farewell tour for Jane's Addiction. The combination of just the right elements (the demented Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, for one, or the sudden explosion of grunge) at just the right time made the traveling freak-show/music festival a wild success.
The timing couldn't have been better for Pearl Jam, who at the time were touring relentlessly to promote their debut album, Ten. In the summer of 1992 they joined the Lollapalooza tour alongside friends Soundgarden, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ministry, as well as Rage Against the Machine and Cypress Hill. Pearl Jam's reputation for unpredictable, explosive live performances spread like wildfire, quickly establishing them as one of the tour's must-see acts. The band was catapulted to superstardom at a dizzying speed, due in part to the exposure they gained with Lollapalooza.
The Lollapalooza festival toured annually until 1997. After a six year absence, the festival returned in 2003, but poor ticket sales kept the show from being a financial success. In 2005, Farrell teamed with Capital Sports & Entertainment to co-produce a reworked version of the festival. Rather than taking the whole production on the road, the revamped festival took place in Chicago's Grant Park and boasted 70 acts on 5 stages with names such as the Pixies, the Killers, Digable Planets, the International Noise Conspiracy and the Black Keys.
Vedder and co. are booked for thirteen European shows this summer, most of them festivals. They will follow the tour with a selection of U.S. dates before playing Lollapalooza.
