Josh Helmuth delivers the top sports stories of the week!
It's only been since Thursday since I last saw you, but already some big news. Beginning with the Olympics. And unfortunately, it has nothing to do with an actual competition. Word broke out late last week that the official uniforms our American athletes will be wearing in London are actually made, not in the USA, but in China. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the USOC should be ashamed of themselves. Representative Steve Isreal referred to the situation, "not just outrageous, it's just plain dumb. It's self defeating." I say that's what you get for outsourcing everything and not hiring my Amish aunt Savilla. She can stitch anything! Ralph Lauren, the makers of the uniforms, promises to have uniforms made in the USA for the 2014 winter olympics in Russia.
Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints finally has his contract! And it's hefty. 5 years, 100 million dollars. Brees has been holding out for a new contract since the end of last season, a season in which he broke Dan Marino's 27-year-old elusive passing record, finishing with 5,476 yards and a 71.2 completion percentage. Not too shabby. Brees celebrated by going to grab a sandwich from a local Jimmy Johns that he owns while signing autographs for fans. What's that?? Really? That's not how you would celebrate after getting $100 million dollars?? Ya, I'm pretty sure I would be in Fiji.
And someone call in Inspector Gadget. The 14th stage of the Tour de France came to a screeching halt on Sunday due to sabotage. Race officials are prompting police to investigate after tacks were found on the road near Foix, France, causing nearly 30 riders to get flat tires while on the course. Really? What happened to the good old days when all you had to do was accuse a rider of performance enhancing drugs???
