American Gladiator: the Wolf and the Warrior
Wolf and Toa square off on the new season of AG

American Gladiators is back for a second season with some new events to challenge both the contestants and the gladiators. Wolf and Toa are two gladiators back for a second round. They suited up in silver spandex to preview the new competitions and adventures in store for season two.

Crave Online: What is new this season on American Gladiators?

Toa: New gladiators, new events, new arena. It is huge, it is the LA Sports Arena and they dedicated it to us so it is our Gladiator home. It is a lot bigger than the other one. The games are everywhere. We are using every element from the floor to the water to the sky. We are flying all over this arena. The rafters. All the events from last year are bigger as well. The wall is about 20 feet higher. Way more difficult than last year.

Wolf: They're wanting every episode to be different. So every episode there'll be something new popping up, whether it be an event or a gladiator. That way it just keeps it fresh and exciting and something that you're gonna want to tune in for because it's not going to be the same old show every day.

Crave Online: How much time did you get to train on the new events?

Toa: We had a week or two to rehearse the new games and get familiar with them, which is not a lot of time because once you step in and play the game, it is new to us again, because we didn’t get to practice a lot. The new events are really exciting and they are going to be revealed per episode. So I think the two being revealed in the first episode are Rocket Ball and Vertigo. Those are the two new ones you’ll see in the first episode. Rocket Ball, I’m not sure if you’ve heard about that game yet, it is like basketball in outer space. We are racheting up into the rafters and we have to defend against these contenders and we are going toward the same basket in the middle, it is just like basketball, but they are trying to go up there to make a basket and we are going up there to try and collide or knock the ball out of their hand, hopefully collide. When they come back down and run back in push the buttons and do it over again. So the whole time there are four people flying up and down and it is really visually stimulating.

Crave Online: Which show is more hardcore, the original show or the new one?

Wolf: No disrespect to the original gladiators, but I think ours is a little more hardcore. They were tough competitors just the same, but nowadays, we're having to compete against UFC, we're having to compete against so many different other things out there. So I think we're trying to bring it a little harder so we can capture that. Plus, we have a lot of cage fighters on our side now, both on the male and female side. We're all fighters, we're all gladiators. I know some of the original gladiators personally, and they've even said that this show's, especially like the Eliminator, is way tougher than their Eliminator. They're like, "You guys have stepped it up."

Crave Online: Wolf, you are the most hardcore gladiator. Have they told you, "That's too much. We can't have you hurting people."?

Wolf: I've been asked to tone it down a little here and there with Season Two because I'm an animal, and that's just not a character. When I compete, I've been a bullfighter for 23 years, rodeo clown-style. So I've been getting hit and run over by bulls for 23 years. I've had over 130 broken bones, three knee surgeries, an Achilles tendon torn, I've had a bull gore me with a horn nine inches into me and almost killed me, and a year to the day of that, I was becoming a gladiator. So the way I look at it is, I've taken all of this abuse all these years, it's my turn to dish it out. So if you're trying to come in and get $100,000 out of my company, you're gonna earn it. So I do tend to get a little vicious and a little ferocious and I do attack a little harder. And they have come to me a couple times and said, "Dude, seriously, tone it down. We're going to have to tranq you." I mean because I do tend to snap sometimes.

Crave Online: How do you tone it down? Do you go to a Zen place?

Wolf: I try to, but it doesn't always work.

Crave Online: Have you found a new sense of celebrity since you started the show?

Toa:  Definitely. I’ve been in the movie industry for 14 years as a stunt man for the Rock when I don’t have all this stuff and now people are like “That’s Toa, that’s Toa.” It is pretty cool. I was in Europe when this show aired the first season and I missed all the local airings. When I came to the airport and landed, I didn’t see it on TV and I didn’t know how big it looked on TV and these kids came running up to me in the airport “Oh Toa!” and I hadn’t even seen one episode yet. It was pretty cool.

Crave Online: How common are injuries on Americna Gladiators?

Wolf: I would say that the odds are pretty good that somebody's gonna get hurt. Last season we had a broken leg, a torn ACL, a few torn ACLs. This season, fortunately, there haven't been any severe ones. We've had an ankle sprain, a couple dislocations. So you're going to have injuries. This isn't ballet. This is a contact sport. So you're gonna have some injuries. They know that coming in. If they don't know that coming, they're dang sure gonna know it leaving.

Crave Online: What's the most important quality you have to have to be a gladiator?

Wolf: Heart. You have to have heart. Heart is what basically separates a boy from a man. It's what separates a girl from a woman. It's what separates a normal person from a gladiator, a warrior. Heart is when you're getting beat down, beat down or you've got injuries that any normal person would step back and say, "You know what? I'm done. I've got to ice. I've got to get some Advil. I'm done. I can't go any further." That's when a gladiator steps up and goes, "I'm fine. I can keep going." And you keep pushing, keep pushing. You separate something, you break something, and you just keep moving. You don't stop. It's been like that in everything I've ever done ... with rodeo. You know the people who will be great at rodeo because they have heart. They get run over or beat up by a bull and they don't go running from the arena. They get up and keep running back at the bull. In any field. In animals and everything. The one that has the biggest heart is the most dominant and that's the one that runs the pack. That's the most important thing I think about being a gladiator. I've seen some of the greatest athletes come through here and not finish because they had no heart. On the competitors' side. I've seen some athletes that came in that had the athleticism to run circles around most of us. And they could get through any event, but they didn't have the heart, so they didn't make it past the first round. I don't care how great an athlete you are, if you don't have heart, you're nothing. And it's a waste of God's talent if you don't have the heart to drive through and use what he gave you.
