Do you remember how much fun we had with Arsenio Hall? Well it looks like George Lopez and company are out to recapture that late night magic. If you’re tired of the same old shtick that the likes of Conan or Letterman are doing then you might agree with George and his take on the late night spectrum. To paraphrase the comedian/actor it certainly is time to get back to the kind of show that is fun for everybody to watch! That’s not to say that only a certain kind of person watches Jimmy Fallon, but only a certain type of person watches Jimmy Fallon (Jimmy Fallon isn’t the type of person that watches Jimmy Fallon so leave your race cards in your pockets).
No, it’s time for a show with mass appeal that will bring guys and gals back to late night, not just to have something to fall asleep to, but a show that will put you to bed with a smile on your face and a song in your heart… seriously!
Starting in November (the 9th) at 11 pm late night will now be completely owned by George Lopez and his new show Lopez Tonight. George Lopez is one of the most engaging comedic figures in the game right now and will bring his considerable acumen to the late night stage. Lopez is a promising alternative to the late night mainstays like Letterman and Conan and a true threat to new comer Jimmy Fallon.
With Wanda Sykes waiting in the wings late nights are going to start looking like a wild west shoot out any minute. Syndication hasn’t really put up a viable late night alternative until now and it will be exciting to see George compete with the networks were money seems to be tight. There was already considerable fallout from Jay Leno moving to primetime, now this? What is a late night talk show host to do, besides pray that he has a job in a season or two?
At any rate this is a win win for fans, who get a chance to see George Lopez do his thing four nights a week. With the George Lopez Show cancelled the only way to get your fix is with reruns. Now George is coming back, and there are no cavemen in his rearview mirror this time.
Who knows who will win and lose in the next stage of late night wars, but I can tell you this, it will be exciting to see everybody put on their best shows to win us over.
