Holy crap, Horatio Sanz is thin now! I hadn't kept up so when I saw him promoting the new show In the Motherhood, I didn't even recognize him. Sanz plays a "manny" on ABC's comedy about parenting.
Crave Online: How does it feel now to have taken the weight off?
Horatio Sanz: Well, it's funny because people always ask like, "Don't you feel better?" And I'm like, "Well…" Because you don't really remember how bad it felt I guess. So I feel better definitely.
Crave Online: How did you do it?
Horatio Sanz: It was actually a real combination of three things. One is I just took it easy with the drinking and partying. Then I ate better and then I just literally joined a gym and just started going a couple days a week at first. So I varied between two or three times a week and also I've had the help of my girlfriend who's very knowledgeable in food and stuff. She's just very supportive and it's really helped me because she knows what's good for you. I know she's a vegetarian so when we go out, I was like oh, I'll try it. I wasn't opposed to it. I wouldn't be like oh, this is gross. So just naturally I just started eating more vegetarian. I still eat meat. I had a giant steak at the hotel yesterday. But I just started eating better and I think just incorporating a vegetarian diet has helped me out a lot and then I joined a gym with a steam room and a hot tub, so I'll work out and reward myself with a steam.
Crave Online: Are you obsessive about health now?
Horatio Sanz: I'm not obsessive but I am treating it more like a hobby. I do think about calories and I do think like if I do this, this'll be better for me. It's funny. It's become, I've made it kind of something that I'm doing as a hobby. I don't know, maybe people would say I'm obsessive. I'm not really obsessive. I don't go every day and it's still kind of hard for me to go. I still have the same attitude, like oh God, I gotta go to the gym. So it's not like I'm like hey, let's go! I'm still pretty lazy about it but I'll go twice. If I go three times a week, it's a very good week but I usually go two.
Crave Online: What will it be like playing one character for a while instead of the many you'd do on SNL?
Horatio Sanz: Well, it's easier in a sense that there's not a lot of work to do as far as the character. You kind of know it. The character that I'm playing here, we developed in another television show, we developed in another pilot. So they wanted me in this show so I know the character and it's pretty much as close a character of myself as I've played. So that's kind of easy. When you do a different character like on the show, it's very exciting because you're creating a new thing and people haven't seen it. But then again, as exciting as it is, it's disposable because you don't usually do it again for a while.
Crave Online: Working with all these women, are you in touch with your feminine side?
Horatio Sanz: I'm getting there. I've known Megan [Mullally] for a few years, I haven't really known Cheryl [Hines] but just meeting them. Jessica St. Clair and I, we both work at this theater in New York, the Upright Citizens Brigade. So we all kind of come from the same place. As soon as we started reading the script, we read it one time and then we read it a second time and the writers were like, "Why don't you guys improvise?" The show became like an hour and a half but they took a lot of what we improvised so it's just really a pleasure to be working with women that are not only just good comedians, but basically Cheryl came from Groundlings and I came from Second City. We're all kind of speaking the same language so it's very convenient.
Crave Online: Is it better to be part of an ensemble or have a Horatio Sanz show?
Horatio Sanz: Oh, I think this is much less stressful for me. It would be a lot harder if I had to go like, "Hey, this is the new me and here's a new show." I'm from improv comedy, sketch comedy and it's never been about me myself. So if ever I could be in an ensemble, especially one with people as talented as these guys are, I'd much rather do this than that.
Crave Online: Were you worried you would be unknown after you lost the weight?
Horatio Sanz: Exactly. I've always been the funny fat guy since I could remember so I am a little worried that people will be like, "Oh, what happened to that guy?" Someone asked me a question about like "What happened? How are you going to play these roles again?" Like I have to play Gobi or something. It's like well, I think the essence of why I was funny will still be there. Playing this character, they didn't have a name for the character at first. They just started calling it Horatio on the scripts. They're like, "We're going to shoot this in a couple weeks. Do you want it to be Horatio?" I was like, "I don't know, that's kind of weird." But then it's good because if you see me and people are calling me Horatio, like oh, yeah, that's Horatio, so it works on that level.
Crave Online: Can you start over in a way?
Horatio Sanz: I'm thinking I can. I don't want to completely change like I've had amnesia or something. Because I've lost about 80 pounds and I look a lot different, I also have a beard now, so I can go around not being recognized which is kind of cool.
Crave Online: Are you booked on Jimmy Fallon yet?
Horatio Sanz: I have not been booked but I'm sure I will be on it. I've actually watched that time slot all the time. I watch Conan. It's one of my favorite shows so I'm definitely going to be watching. I'll do whatever, if he wants me to call and help him out, definitely. It'd be fun.
