Crave Online: What do you think of his chances as a late night host?
Horatio Sanz: Knowing Jimmy, I think that he'll be great at it because no one expected him to be good at Update really and he went in there, his first couple times were a little shaky but then he became excellent. I think he's just one of these guys who is real talented, really works hard and he'll make that show work. I think he'll bring a youth to the program that'll be kind of cool and welcomed and he's also just a very funny guy so it's not like putting in a host who's good with a microphone. He has really good instincts and he's going to surround himself with really funny people so I think the show's going to be great.
Crave Online: Did the SNL experience cement some bad habits health-wise?
Horatio Sanz: Certainly. Certainly. Working on that show, there's a lot of going out to bars after rehearsals and stuff like that. The thing is, we never have to be at work before noon, unless we're shooting a commercial parody or something, which is only once a week. So you can go the whole year and not wake up before noon. It's kind of fun but then you're like okay, what do you do at night? So a lot of people were all kind of in the same bag and because of the stress of the show I think lends itself to let's go talk and let's go have a drink, it can be pretty unhealthy if you don't watch yourself.
Crave Online: When do you know it's time to leave SNL?
Horatio Sanz: Well, I've answered this question before. When you first start, for the first couple years, you're sure you're going to get fired. So it's like the first two or three years, like, "Oh, this year I'm not going to be brought back." But then you get brought back. Then by the time you get comfortable and settled in, like oh, I'm good, this is good, I'm having fun, they're like, "Okay, now you've got to start thinking of leaving." At which point you're kind of like, "Oh, I have to go." I was going to stay for another year. I had tested to do Update with Amy and I told Lorne that if it didn't happen, then I should probably move on and I actually recommended some guys that he should go see audition. Then what ended up happening was that I didn't get it and so I was like, "Okay, well, now what am I going to do?" That ended up not happening for that year.
Crave Online: What is the "what do I do next" zone like?
Horatio Sanz: It's not as frightening as it's just kind of a shock to your system because no other show is really working in that schedule. No other job is really working that schedule unless you're going to do like a Watchmen or something.
Crave Online: Have you been back to SNL?
Horatio Sanz: I have, I've done like two guest spots and I also just come by randomly on Saturdays and hang out.
Crave Online: What's it like?
Horatio Sanz: It really does feel like going back to college or going back to high school. There's fond memories of it but you can't really see yourself. It's just like once you're out of it, you're not in it and the things that matter to you when you're in it, they're not the same as they used to be.
Crave Online: Would it be a dream to be invited to host SNL?
Horatio Sanz: You know, I just thought about that for the first time recently. It's not really a dream. I think being on the show so much, you kind of get that out. That was a dream accomplished. To be asked to host again would be fun but I imagine it's probably not as fun as it would've been when I was doing it because you're fresh and it's new. Now it would be like okay, we're going back to do this. I mean, I would do it and I would love to do it but I don't look at it as oh, I'd like to do that, because I think being on the show for eight years will kind of get it out of your system.
