Neil Flynn explores 'The Janitor'

There are plenty of hospital shows with funny doctors who lighten the mood, but only Scrubs gives the janitor his due. Neil Flynn plays the hospital custodian who spends more time devising ways to screw with J.D. than actually cleaning up. As the janitor, Neil Flynn gets to get laughs without having to memorize any medical jargon. The mysterious, still unnamed, character has one more season to fill in the details of his backstory.

CraveOnline: What's new for Janitor this year?

Neil Flynn: Well, we'll discover in the season premiere that the janitor has got himself a girl. Even though we learned a long time ago that he has a wife, maybe that wasn't exactly true, or now he's got a wife and a girlfriend. You never really know.

CraveOnline: Didn't we see him on a date last year?

Neil Flynn: I've had a date. The janitor's had a date on at least one occasion, but I don't think he's ever officially announced a girl. And we never have seen the wife, so at this point we have to assume that's a lie.

CraveOnline: Do you even know what's true about him at this point?

Neil Flynn: No. I was just in a conversation about that. The fun part about playing Janitor is that at this point, pretty much anything could be true and anything heretofore established as true could end up being a lie. So anything's possible. He could at the end, the last episode, a CIA helicopter could come pick him up and bring him back to Quantaco, Virginia where he runs things. Anything's possible.

CraveOnline: Would The Todd approve of his girlfriend?

Neil Flynn: I think The Todd approves of anything that walks. The omnisexual Todd. I would suggest that The Todd steer way clear of the janitor's girlfriend. I don't know if that'll even come up at some point. We've established subtly over time I think that the janitor isn't a fan of Todd's omnivorous sexuality. The Todd should probably stay clear. We've all known guys roughly like the janitor and you don't mess with their girlfriend.

CraveOnline: Will we ever find out his name?

Neil Flynn: I think we'll at least get a suggestion of a likely one. I don't know. There's no hard plan there and if he ends up with a name, that's great. I think that'll satisfy some people and bring some sort of closure in that category. But if he doesn't and just goes down in history as Janitor, I'm fine with that.

CraveOnline: Could you see the show ending with Janitor giving J.D. a hug and making up?

Neil Flynn: I think it's possible but I think one would be correct to view that with some skepticism. I think maybe if it ends with him giving a big hug, we would also see J.D. with a "Kick Me" sign on his back or worse.

CraveOnline: Are there any pranks that haven't been done yet?

Neil Flynn: There's probably a lot of them. I don't know of any that are upcoming but sure, if you had the time on your hands, like the janitor does, to think up ways to mess with somebody, I'm sure there are ways out there that begin to arise.

CraveOnline: What was the talk about bringing elements of your real life into Janitor, like when J.D. sees the scene of you in The Fugitive?

Neil Flynn: That was very strange and that has provided fodder for some message boards across this fine country of ours. I thought it was a strange idea when I heard it because I said, like anyone else, "That would make the janitor me." I don't know if that's ever been done on television. It would be like Kramer's real name is Michael Richards. That's odd. But as it turns out, in the end, it's just one episode of a TV show that was kind of clever in trying something that I don't think has been tried before. I think we have to ignore that as far as whether that identifies the janitor and gives him a name. I think we just have to pretend that the janitor was once an actor in The Fugitive. Although who knows? Maybe that possibility is still out there. I don't know. Maybe in the end, they'll say, "Good night, Neil" and I'll say, "Good night" and I'm off to Hollywood.

CraveOnline: Do you treat janitors nicer now?

Neil Flynn: I'm always prepared to. I've never had an encounter with a janitor who recognized me. I have had the experience, because our character names are on our dressing room doors, so every day I see "Janitor" and know that I'm welcome there. I have had a couple times where I'm in a shopping mall or a movie theater or something and I see that door with Janitor on it and for a moment I feel like I'm welcome to wander on in. I've never actually done it though. Maybe I should try it.

CraveOnline: Do you do any cleaning around the house?

Neil Flynn: A little bit. I'm not great at it but I could be a lot worse. I've only lived in this house for a short time so there are things that have to be done around the house and I'm getting to them. I'm not the world's best handyman but I'm not the worst either.

CraveOnline: Do you mess with people in real life?

Neil Flynn: No. In that sense I'm not like the character at all. Probably my friends might tell you that I sometimes give them a hard time verbally as far as kidding them or teasing them about something, but anything that requires any planning or plotting is not my forte.

CraveOnline: Will you miss Janitor when it's over?

Neil Flynn: Absolutely. I think it's very likely this will be the best job I ever have. I'm not even sure, there's only been a couple times in my life that I've played the same character more than once. But 150 some times, I have a great job and I'm well aware of that. Even though I hope something will come along to be my next best favorite job, I'll miss this one.

CraveOnline: Who would you like to have more scenes with in the last few episodes?

Neil Flynn: Oh gosh. You know, the first year, almost year and a half, I only had scenes with J.D. Then once we realized we were going to stay on the air, my social circle widened. I think the part has gotten better because of that, at least from my point of view. So I get to do scenes with a lot of characters. I can tell you that I always enjoy doing scenes with Sam Lloyd who plays Ted the lawyer, or any of the scenes where we have our so-called Brain Trust, which changes a little bit in each incarnation. I like when we have our temporary motley crew with a mission. I think we've done that at least once so far this year, a meeting of the Brain Trust to solve some perceived problem. I know Sam and high fivin' Todd and Doug the crypt keeper or whatever they call him, nervous guy Doug are in that. I've always liked shows that have a strong cast of secondary characters. One of the greatest examples ever I would say is The Simpsons. If you think about it, you could name 100 characters recognizable from that show. I think Scrubs has done a good job of having a strong team coming off the bench. I think it just fills out the world of the show very well. We obviously spend a lot of time doing it and we're aware of it but sometimes people, as I'm sure you can imagine, people that are fans of the show know more things than we remember. But I'm that way too with whatever my favorite show has been over the years. I probably remember more about the Dick Van Dyke Show than Dick Van Dyke does.

CraveOnline: Do you have anything lined up after Scrubs?

Neil Flynn: No. The next few months I think, we'll start looking for the next spot to land on but nothing at the moment. And I'm open to anything at this point. I would love to get involved in movies and at the same time I would be glad to do another television show. This has been such a pleasant experience.

CraveOnline: You've done some movies in hiatuses that are still coming out, right?

Neil Flynn: I know of at least one but it might be only one.

CraveOnline: Sex and Death 101 is one, right?

Neil Flynn: It was. I'm not sure what kind of an opening that's going to get but I was in it. [I play] a guy, kind of a suburban married guy who's living vicariously through a sexually active, hyperactive friend.

CraveOnline: Is it a substantial supporting role?

Neil Flynn: No, I wouldn't say so. It's a handful of scenes. You know I'm in it. It's probably about as important as Janitor is to Scrubs in that you knew I was there, but I don't earn much credit or blame for the success or failure of the project.

CraveOnline: You also played a lot of cops. Why is that? Do you just have a cop look?

Neil Flynn: A little bit I guess, a little bit of a blue collar look but I think the main reason for that is a lot of projects have small roles that are police officers, so a lot of times when I was in my two or three or four line roles, it happened to be a cop as opposed to a florist or a random passerby. But there's cops in everything practically. I'll play 'em forever if people want to hire me.

CraveOnline: On the Scrubs DVDs, the main outtakes are you giving alternate lines. How do you feel about that?

Neil Flynn: I'm okay with it. It's about me so it feeds my ego but I get a kick out of that. That's one aspect of the job that I really enjoy. When people work together, the collaborative effort that we make on the set where the writers write very funny material but if you're inspired at the moment to offer an alternative, they're okay with that. So I enjoy that and sometimes there are two or three or four alternatives, one as amusing as the other and they can only choose one. It's fun to see the other options that you've long since forgotten about.

CraveOnline: The other side of that is if they're not very good, they end up there too.

Neil Flynn: That's true. Maybe they got edited out with good reason. Although, you're suggesting that I'm capable of saying something that is not funny and I just have to say that I'm alarmed and aggravated with that suggestion.

CraveOnline: You're probably right.

Neil Flynn: Thank you.

CraveOnline: I'm not good enough at improvising. Someone else probably could have played along for 10 minutes.

Neil Flynn: But you did the basics, which is to say yes, to agree. If anything, I dropped the ball. We could have gone for 20 minutes on that one. Don’t worry about it.

CraveOnline: Is there anything else coming up on Scrubs that I forgot to ask about?

Neil Flynn: No, not that I know of. I think we've always been a little bit outside the spotlight so the people that watch the show are very, very loyal. We'll enjoy doing the episodes we have left and I'm sure our fans will enjoy watching them and then we'll disappear into the retirement home of television history or some such metaphor. I don't think you failed to cover anything.

CraveOnline: His name and his girlfriend are probably the big things.

Neil Flynn: The name I just have to say wait and see and the girlfriend, I don't know where that relationship goes but it's nice to know that the man has some [partners].
