Web video finally gets their own dedicated award show, with the first annual Streamy Awards which were presented by Kodak. The Streamy Awards recognize shows produced specifically for the web. The awards were developed by video web news hub, Tubefilter and web tv guide, Tilzy.TV and founded by a group of new media types. The nominations covering 24 categories were reviewed by the recently formed International Academy of Web Television.
The nominees for the inaugural Streamys included some CraveOnline favorites such as; “You Suck At Photoshop”, “Battlestar Galactica: The Face of the Enemy”, “The Legend of Neil”, “Gemini Division” and one of my favorite shows to watch while traveling, Epic-FU!
The awards were streamed live over the weekend and there were a lot of nominees that the non-web tv crowd would recognize: Joss Whedon, Paul Rudd, Neal Patrick Harris and Rosario Dawson. Lisa Kudrow and Natalie Raitano. The future of web TV was there as well, with the leads (David Faustino and Zoe Bell) of two of Crackle’s most popular 2009 shows presenting awards.
The show moved faster than a lot of the bloated mainstream TV award shows do. There were high points like Felicia Day’s (The Guild) honest acceptance speech and there were some lows, like the several teleprompter fumbles of the night. Lisa Kudrow appeared to go off script and in an awkwardly funny moment of the night.
As far as the awards went, Joss Whedon’s mega hit, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Felicia Day’s “The Guild”, were the big winners both taking several awards home that night.
A benefit of watching the show was getting introduced tof shows that I had never seen before, like “Pink” and “Children’s Hospital”.
Overall the Streamys were entertaining and a great incentive for the budding web producers out there to start cranking out some new shows.
