Last week, word broke that "Thundercats" is returning to TV with a brand new animated series. And now we know that it won't be the only classic '80s cartoon to get a new lease on life.
'Voltron: Defender of the Universe" is being relaunched with a new animated series on Nicktoons, according to Variety. Mattel is also planning a new line of "Voltron" toys.
The move back to television is apparently due in part to the lack of progress with the "Voltron" live action film that has been in development for several years. The new animated series and toy line are seen as a way to introduce "Voltron" to a new generation of fans.
The new series will be called "Voltron Force" and it will follow the five space explorers who pilot the giant robot lions that combine to form the even larger robot, Voltron. While the series is said to be faithful to the original series, new "recruits" will also be introduced to fight alongside the original heroes.
New episodes are expected to air in time for the 25th anniversary of "Voltron" next year. "Voltron Force" will be the first "Voltron" animated series since the CGI "Voltron: The Third Dimension" premiered in 1998. However, the toys may not be released until after the animated series, in order to ensure that the figures can transform properly.
"It's an exciting way to introduce the brand to a generation that isn't familiar with 'Voltron,'" said World Event Productions President Ted Koplar. "What's paramount is getting the toys right. They're pretty involved toys that have to transform and fit together."
