Earlier this year, Disney reacquired the distribution rights to "Iron Man 3" from Paramount and indicated that the film would be a priority after "The Avengers" hits theaters in 2012. But according to "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau, the next sequel may actually follow up on all of Marvel Studio's "Avengers" related films to date.
"In theory, 'Iron Man 3' is going to be a sequel or continuation of 'Thor,' 'Hulk,' 'Captain America' and 'Avengers,'" Favreau told MTV News. "This whole world... I have no idea what it is. I don't think they do either, from conversations I've had with those [directors]."
"I don't know a lot about 'Thor,'" elaborated Favreau. "I've talked to ['Thor' director] Kenneth Branagh. "I've met the cast members. I had a conversation with ['Avengers' director Joss Whedon] in passing, giving him my two cents about the film."
"Honestly, right now 'Captain America' and 'Thor' are [Marvel's] big priorities, and you learn things by shooting and making movies," continued Favreau. "The script is one thing, but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room — especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film — you really learn as you go."
While the script for "Iron Man 3" still hasn't been written yet, Favreau has previously hinted that long time "Iron Man" foe The Mandarin may make his debut in the third film, following hints of his presence in the first film as the head of the "Ten Rings" terrorist network that held Tony Stark hostage.
"Iron Man 3" is expected to launch on May 03, 2013.
