When Hugh Jackman next reprises his career-making role as Wolverine, director Darren Aronofsky may be calling the shots.
Aronofsky is in talks with 20th Century Fox to helm "X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2," according to Deadline. Based upon the classic "Wolverine" miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, the sequel finds Logan in Japan as he takes on a dangerous crime lord. The script was adapted by Christopher McQuarrie, who won a screenwriting Oscar for "The Usual Suspects."
Jackman starred in Aronofsky's "The Fountain" and reportedly grew close to him on the set. However, Deadline states that Aronofsky is also interested in directing a period crime thriller by screenwriter Will Beall called "Gangster Squad" for Warner Brothers. "30 Days of Night" and "Twilight: Eclipse" director David Slade was also reportedly under serious consideration for "Wolverine 2" a few months ago.
Aronofsky is currently sought after by several studios following the early screenings for his next film, "Black Swan." He was also a serious contender for the Christopher Nolan led "Superman" reboot which ultimately went to Zack Snyder. Aronofsky has also previously been linked to an adaptation of Garth Ennis' classic comic book series, "Preacher."
More famously, Aronofsky was set to direct a "Robocop" reboot for MGM, but was rumored to have lost interest in it after refusing to give in to the studio's demand's to make the movie in 3-D.
Earlier this year, Jackman dropped out of "Avon Man" to get into shape for "Wolverine 2," which is scheduled to shoot early next year. Given the relatively short time frame, it seems likely that the director will be finalized soon.
