These days, Jamie Lee Curtis is best known for that poopy yogurt, but you should remember she’s been in some awesome movies like True Lies, Blue Steel and Halloween. A lot of her films are back in the spotlight this year and we got to talk to her about them while she was promoting the family comedy You Again.
With Avatar becoming the biggest movie of all time, it’s brought up all the old memories of James Cameron too, including True Lies, the spy spoof that Curtis was in. Even 15 years later, it seems some people still think it was sexist because Arnold interrogates his wife and makes her do a sexy dance.
After all this time, Curtis finally settles the debate. “Who cares?” she said. “Who gives a sh*t? Honestly, who cares whether or not True Lies is sexist? Who cares? Is it funny? Yeah. Does it have some action? Yeah. Is it a little sexy? Yeah.”
Full disclosure: I was always on the pro-True Lies side. I think it’s good fun. If anything, the husband is portrayed negatively for doing those things and she appears triumphant. But the “who gives a sh*t” defense is more appropriate.
“Oh, please. Oh, darling. It’s not sexist at all.”
Cameron’s ex, and Blue Steel director Kathryn Bigelow won the Oscar this year for The Hurt Locker. Curtis hopes that makes people rediscover her female cop movie. “I kind of thought maybe it would get a reissue or there’d be some sort of Blu-ray Blue Steel Blue something and nothing, nothing. It was good. It was interesting.”
In You Again, Curtis costars with Avatar’s Sigourney Weaver. Curtis got her own Dr. Grace Augustine action figure, but she had her own action figure too. Not a Laurie Strode figure. Not a Wanda figure. It was Kit Foster.
“So, Sigourney Weaver was in the most successful movie of all time and she will tell you that, over and over again. My action figure from the piece of sh*t Virus is bigger than hers. That’s all you have to know. Size does matter. Hers is half off and mine I bought on eBay for a premium of $8.95.”
Just the fact that Virus action figures ever existed is kind of awesome. During preproduction there must have been hopes for some merchandising bonanza. “Oh please, are you kidding? I’m just letting you all know that although I understand she speaks French and was in the number one movie ever, my action figure is bigger than hers and that’s all that you really need to know about me.
