Indiana Jones 5 Rumors Emerge and Quickly Debunked

The interwebs are wrong again.

In the online world where sites claw and compete to be the first to report the latest in movie news, it's par for the course for some misinformation to hit the feeds every now and again. That's what led to this week's headlines around the 'net that Indiana Jones 5 was not only confirmed, but ready to shoot next year. Unfortunately, (or fortunately for fans tired of nuking the fridge) the news turned out to be just another lie.

Issuing a statement via Twitter, Frank Marshall, who's produced every Indy film in the past, flat-out denied the info. "The rumor about INDY 5 is completely false," he wrote. "Nothing has changed, we are not shooting next year and still in the research phase..."

So how did a small, false rumor spread so far? As is often the case, a foreign website (with some purportedly good scoops under its belt) ran a story that had exclusive info from an unnamed source about a development in the production. In this case, the site was Stuff, a New Zealand online publication that ran the following:

Indiana Jones 5 will begin shooting next year, and much of the plot line will be centred around the Bermuda Triangle, an area over the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft are said to have disappeared.

[...]

"Shia LaBeouf has a central role again as Indy's son but this will be a blockbuster made in the old fashioned way rather than the CGI efforts of the last movie," the source added.

AICN quickly picked up the news which then spread like wildfire. And who can blame them? After so many off-hand comments from star Harrison Ford on whether he'd return and statements from Shia LaBeouf (Mutt) about what went wrong with the previous installment, audience members have been clamoring to know when Indy would be back and if he'd ever right the wrongs committed by Crystal Skull. Looks like we'll have to wait longer to find out.
