Is DC Comics getting ready to enter the superhero movie arena full-force? According to The Hollywood Reporter, fans could soon be seeing DC-favorites like The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman joining the likes of Batman and Green Lantern in their own big-screen adaptations.
Though no official statement has been made by either DC or Warner Bros., the studio responsible for DC Comics' movie adaptations, a recent meeting between WB's CEO, Barry Meyer, and investors led to confirmation (behind closed doors) that DC is ready to mobilize its big-name properties. While The Flash is reportedly close to getting the greenlight on production, movies for characters like Wonder Woman and Aquaman are slowly working their way through the development stages.
Even as Ryan Reynolds is saving the world on the set of the upcoming Green Lantern film and the very beginnings of Batman 3 and the Superman reboot are taking shape, the next two years have long-been thought of as Marvel's time to shine -- what with Marvel properties like Captain America, Thor, X-Men: First Class, The Avengers, and a Spider-Man reboot heading to theaters. But the addition of three new superhero-helmed films could tip the scales in DC's favor while helping to pave the way for a -- dare comic book fans even dream? -- Justice League of America film to compete with Marvel's Avengers team.
It's worth noting, though, that of the upcoming Marvel properties, two of them are being handled by completely different studios. While the next Spider-Man lashes in development over at Sony, 20th Century Fox will be responsible for the upcoming X-Men: First Class along with potentially more X-Men prequels.
And, while DC Comics' move appears to be on a much larger scale than Marvel's proposed mini-movie plan, it's still monumental that so many comic characters who are often either shuffled to the background and/or handed straight-to-DVD animated films, are finally receiving their own live-action adaptations.
