Tony Stark’s dad is having a bit of an identity crisis. Granted, the average moviegoer probably doesn’t remember Howard Stark’s appearance in the first Iron Man (He was shown only in cameo-capacity through a still image montage of Tony’s rise to power). When the second film came along, though, it wasn’t just Terrence Howard that got recast; Mad Men’s John Slattery took over the far more expanded Stark papa. Now the reins are being handed over once again to An Education star Dominic Cooper for Captain America: The First Avenger, according to Salon.com.
Though Cooper is just 16 years Slattery’s junior he will, presumably, play the character at double that, portraying Stark as he appeared during World War II, playing an active role in the Super Soldier program that turns ordinary soldier Steve Rogers into the shield-swinging Captain America.
Dominic Cooper joins Chris Evans in the lead as well as Hugo Weaving as the villainous Red Skull, Toby Jones as the also-villainous Arnim Zola, Hayley Atwell as romantic interest Peggy Carter, Sebastian Stan and sidekick Bucky Barnes, Samuel L. Jackson as returning favorite Nick Fury and Tommy Lee Jones in a currently unknown role.
Captain America: The First Avenger is shooting now and will hit theaters on July 22, 2011.
