Angels Gone Bad

When Angels Go Bad: a look at dark angels in film.

Fallen angels have always captivated the public, be it through their supernatural characteristics or the struggles they face on a mortal planet. In the upcoming horror/action film Legion, God loses faith in humanity once more - but instead of a great flood, this time he sends a fleet of angels to do the dirty work. It's an extermination mission from the heavens, and humanity's odds don't look good!

In honor of Legion's Jan 22 theatrical release, we've put together a collection of the best Angels Gone Bad in film.

Dogma

Leave it to Kevin Smith to slaughter every sacred cow from here to Hades. An abortion clinic worker (who may or may not be descended from Christ) is enlisted to prevent two angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, ironically) from reentering Heaven and causing the universe to collapse in on itself. She's helped by two prophets, Jay and Silent Bob. With the help of Rufus, the 13th Apostle, they must stop those who stand in their way and prevent the angels from entering Heaven.

The Prophecy

The supernatural Chistopher Walken delivers a stunning performance as Gabriel, the archangel who brings the battle for Heaven to Earth. Out to enlist the blackest of souls for a final war against God, Gabriel wreaks havoc in his quest to build the ultimate dark army. You may love Mr. Walken, but you've never seen him like this.

Angel Heart

Brooklyn private eye Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) is hired by shady Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro) to locate a pop singer who reneged on a debt. The only problem is that each time Harry makes contact with someone who might know the singer's whereabouts, he or she is killed in a horrible, ritualistic fashion. Is it a Satanic cult, or something more? Eventually Harry solves the mystery, coming to realize that he had the answer all along (hint: it's in the article's title).

Fallen

When convicted murderer Edgar Reese is executed, he dies with disturbing confidence and pride. Soon after, a series of murders are committed using Reese's methods, and it becomes clear that the spirit that inhabited Reese moves from person to person by touch. As John Hobbes comes closer to the secret, the dark angel taunts him more and more openly, threatening everyone Hobbes holds dear.

Constantine

Constantine tells the story of supernatural detective John Constantine (Reeves), who has literally been to hell and back. In trying to solve a woman's mysterious suicide, Constantine is pulled into a world of demons and angels that thrives on the underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in an apocalyptic series of otherworldy events, Constantine and the dead girl's twin sister join forces in a desperate bid to save humanity from biblical evil. Huge bonus points for Tilda Swindon as the beautifully androgynous archangel Gabriel.

Heaven Can Wait

A star football player is taken by an eager angel before he was supposed to die, and comes back to life in the body of a recently-murdered millionaire. Producer-director-writer-star Warren Beatty remade the 1941 film Here Comes Mr. Jordan. He may not have a chance at the Super Bowl any longer, but a second chance at something else is on the line: love.

City Of Angels

An angel falls in love with a mortal, and is faced with a dilemma: Does he make the ultimate sacrifice and give up his wings, so to speak, for a mortal life with a woman he's fallen for (literally)? And what if she should die that very same day? City Of Angels tells the most bittersweet of love stories, centered on sacrifice and the struggles we must go through to be true to our own hearts.
