David Cronenberg switches gears

The iconic director works on a novel adaptation.

David Cronenberg has always had a taste for thriller and horror flicks, renowned for directing chilling big-screen flicks like “The Fly,” “Dead Ringers,” “Eastern Promises,” and “A History of Violence.” However, news recently came out of his Toronto office that he is working on a new project – a film adaptation of contemporary author Don DeLillo's provoking novel "Cosmopolis.”

The 2003 fictional book, which received a mixed bag of reviews, is the story of a financial wizard and billionaire named Eric Packer, his challenging trek across Manhattan in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and what unfolds as he deals with his personal and professional problems from the inside of his limo (not David Cronenberg’s usual movie fare). The Canadian director is involved in not only directing the flick, which will begin production in 2010, but he is also currently writing the adaptation too. Shooting will take place in New York as well as Toronto, and “Cosmoplis” will be co-produced by Paris-based production house Alfama Films, headed by producer Paulo Branco, and Cronenberg’s firm Antenna Ltd.

David Cronenberg has won a total of 53 awards and has been nominated for another 33 (pretty impressive), however he has yet to take home an Oscar.

In addition to his work on DeLillo’s novel, David Cronenberg is also currently working on another big-screen adaptation of “The Matarese Circle,” which is based on Robert Ludlum's spy tale. The flick is rumoured to star bigwigs Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise.
