The culture-clash storyline is a necessary building block for any good sci-fi film or TV series. After all, without a great struggle against an oppressor, invader or otherwise menacing force, what's the point? In honor of the fast-approaching Aug. 14 opening of District 9 from TriStar pictures, we put together a collection of the 9 most iconic culture clashes ever caught on film. Get ready to fight for the survival of mankind.
Man vs. Terminators (Terminator)
Robots with glowing eyes and Austrian accents wreak havoc in the '80s and '90s with a time machine and a mission to wipe out mankind, but are thwarted by a former diner waitress who realizes her kid is the savior of all mankind - because some bug-eyed dude in a trenchcoat got her pregnant and told her so. Before getting killed by the robots, of course.

Fast forward to the future, after a nuclear holocaust has left the world a ball of Skynet-monitored wreckage with few human survivors and turned Christian Bale into a raging maniac when someone sets foot on his movie set. The terminators make a cyborg that thinks it's human, befriends the Bale savior and takes him right to the heart of Skynet's operations, where Schwarzenegger steps out of his cooling chamber and beats the ever-living hell out of him. That should've been the end of it, but then again it would be a shame if Tim Burton's wife had actually put everyone in check mate and ended the franchise there, so we can "look forward to" at least two more Terminator films.
Man vs Aliens (Alien, of course!)
One bleeds acid, has a pointed whiplash tail attached to its bony exoskeleton and tends to kill by impaling the face of its victim with a projecting mouth-inside-a-mouth. The other is a soft-flesh emotionally-driven being that just so happens to make a perfect incubation chamber for the young of their enemy, which then bursts from the host's chest cavity in teeth-gnashing glory/horror.
Guess which is which?
