Some people may say; “So what? Don’t be a sell out! Screw the MPAA and take the NC-17.” Those are the people that don’t realize what that rating means to a film. If a movie gets an NC-17 rating it can only be shown in limited theatres, no one under 17 is permitted to see it even with an adult, and you can also only advertise it at certain times, and certain places. This would damage the films money intake (and yes film making is always about the money) to the point that the studio would probably have to drop the film. This is so critical in fact that Kevin stated he was under contractual obligations to the studio to make sure the film got an R rating.
Well without wanting to cut the film and ruin what I am sure will be his most epic movie to date, Mr. Smith decided to take it to the MPAA board for an appeal (asking to reverse the decision without major editing) and get the film an R rating. As of August 4th he made his appeal and the MPAA made their decision yesterday, deciding to overturn the NC-17 rating and givie Zach and Miri an R. Needless to say this is quite the victory for Kevin Smith. Zach and Miri Make a Porno releases nationwide October 31st .
