Darren Aronofsky to direct Robocop

New Robocop film heading to theaters in 2010.
MGM has singed Darren Aronofsky to direct the next Robocop movie. The director is best known for directing ‘The Fountain’, as well as ‘Pi’ and ‘Requiem for a Dream’. The movie will be written by David Self who wrote ‘Road to Perdition’. Are audiences ready for a new Robocop film? I guess it depends on who you ask.

"Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited.", That’s the official line from MGM’s Mary Parent from a press conference yesterday.

The last Robocop film didn’t exactly inspire confidence in a sequel but that was a long time ago. After seeing what was done with Iron Man recently there is plenty reason to get excited about the prospect of an updated Robocop film.

MGM is working in conjunction with Phoenix Pictures to produce the film, and CEO Mike Medavoy was actually with Orion when they produced Robocop all those years ago, "After making the first ROBOCOP at Orion more than 20 years ago, I'm thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self."

So the director of Pi wants to tackle Robocop, and who is to say he can’t. It’s not like the special effects will be an issue, they pulled it off in 87, it should be even better now that its 2008 and technology has come such a long way. David Self is a busy man these days with ‘God of War’ in production for Universal, and he was a writer on Universals ‘Wolfman’ which is also currently in production.
