Ben Stiller brought the comic fury in a pitch for his new movie, aided in no small part by his Tropic Thunder co-stars Jack Black and career-revival goldenboy Robert Downey, Jr. Other highlights included a West-Side Story-style showdown between Myers and Chris Brown, a crowd reaction to Johnny Depp that rivals Oprah's maniacal audience on her "favorite things" episodes, James Franco and Seth Rogen smoking a massive joint on live television, and....damnit, I'm really about to say this, an impressive performance by Coldplay.
Hell, even Tom Cruise got his alien-worshipping ass on board to present a lifetime achievement (Generation?) award to Adam Sandler, repeatedly referring to him as the Sandman before introducing a montage of every golden moment in the comedian's history. Sandler then launched into an over-the-top homage to himself, complete with a cover of Carly Simon's "Nobody Does it Better" (complete with a Kevin James/Rob Schneider dance solo).
The Pussycat Dolls delivered a useless, sleazy "performance" near the end of the show, chanting about wanting to be famous and raising the interesting question: who the hell is their demographic? Other lowlight: the transparent bitterness on Jonah Hill's face as Superbad went 0-for-5 in the awards department. Yeah, that's right, it was an awards show. But nobody over 13 watching really cares about the golden popcorn nonsense.
The list of winners is completely irrelevant (best movie was Transformers), but if you're interested head to MTV.com for details.
