Battlestar Galactica Season Three DVD

Get caught up in time for the final season.
As the final season of Battlestar Galactica begins, the third season collection is out on DVD just in time to catch up, or just get your BSG fix on in between new episodes. Like previous collections, it is full of extras to give us more to watch.

The new additions are deleted scenes, which exist for almost every episode. Pretty much every character has some meaty scenes, several minutes in length so these are not just trims. There are certainly enough good ones to warrant using the "Play all" option on each disc.

There are significant Starbuck scenes including a suicide attempt and some melodramatic relationship talks. Admiral Adama shares some memories and works up the troops into inspiration. The Cylon hotties talk amongst themselves while projecting environments. Gaius Baltar tries to fit in with the Cylon but can't even hold a conversation.

Of course some scenes are just walking the halls and dealing with administrative details, or backstory that we already know. Gaius Baltar explains Cylon functionality but you knew that already. That is complimented by a scene where the Cylons discuss human nature.

Ronald Moore's podcasts are included with each episode. You probably already heard those when they were released, but it's nice to collect them all for review during complete season marathons. Similarly, the Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance webisodes are also included.

David Eick's video blogs were also previously available, but they provide a bit more humor than the other straight features. Most of the actors and creators have self-deprecating senses of humor, but guess who's always serious on camera?

There were some new commentaries recorded. They are still pretty straight, talking about technical aspects, casting and creative processes, but they are packed with barely a break for the speaker to breathe.

Episode 308, "Unfinished Business" is presented as an extended episode. Running an hour and 10 minutes long, this is more than just a few trims reconstituted. As the commentary points out, this version of the episode explains things that were left implied in the final cut, reorganizes some shots (one is transposed an hour later in the episode) and emphasizes other storylines. It seems a bit more artsy, opening with reflective faces and feet.

BSG knows how to treat its fans and this DVD collection gives them more of what they want. Whether you're collecting the archival material or looking for new additions to the story, it's all here.
