History of Teen Thrillers
Evolution of the high school slasher.
Naturally, a good percentage of teen horror films take place at night, usually during a rainstorm. Without fail, there is always the half-wit girl who does precisely the worst thing someone trying not to be killed can do, as well as the arrogant meathead you hope is the first to get it. The phone lines inevitably get cut, the funny, likable guy gets killed and the prettiest girl never dies.
The formula was perfected in the '90s, a decade that became a true golden age for teen slasher flicks, giving birth to some of the most memorable films to exist in the genre: Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Disturbing Behavior and an assortment of (less memorable) sequels to follow.
The latest installment in the teen thriller franchise is Prom Night. Directed by Nelson McCormick, Prom Night is a remake of a 1980 Canadian horror film starring Leslie Nielsen and Jamie Lee Curtis, directed by Paul Lynch. Imagine that, Leslie Nielson in a serious role! Taglines to the film included "For some, it's the end of innocence. For others, it's THE END" and "Some will be crowned. Others will lose their heads." Man, they just don't make 'em like they used to.
Three Prom Night sequels were made over the next ten years to lesser success. The updated version, written by J.S. Cardone stars Brittany Snow as Donna, a girl trying to escape the horrors of her past with a new life. Her prom night should have been the best night of her life, but when things turn deadly it becomes clear that the obsessive maniac from her past has returned. Now all Donna can do is try to keep her best friends from being killed - as well as herself. Also starring Johnathon Schaech, Jessica Stroup and Jana Kramer, Prom Night hits theaters April 11th.
