After seeing only 15 minutes of edited footage from Spurlock’s new film Where in The World is Osama bin Laden? at the Berlin Film Festival back in February, the Weinstein brothers wrote a check for $25 million on the spot, snapping up rights to the film. Did Spurlock manage to locate the 9/11 mastermind? Nobody seems to know for sure, and it’s likely to stay that way until the film’s first showing at the Sundance Film Festival next month. Potential distributors wanting to see the documentary’s 15 minute clip in February were made to sign extensive non-disclosure agreements before viewing.
Daniel Marracino, director of photography for Where in The World, discussed the film with Variety magazine in July, stating, "We've definitely got the Holy Grail." The “Holy Grail” of a film centered on a search for the world’s most wanted man seems to be rather obvious, but it could just be a brilliant publicity stunt. Finding Osama bin Laden is an unlikely feat to say the least, not to mention the message the film would send to the world about the glaring ineptitude of our own government intelligence if Spurlock had succeeded. As for now, we can only wait for Sundance….
