No elderly cyborgs allowed this time.

James Middleton, producer for the TV series “The Sarah Conner Chronicles”, is overseeing the development of a fourth installment in the Terminator series. He told IGN that pre-production should begin by the end of the year, for a predicted 2009 release. It will be titled simply Terminator, with a subtitle but without the number 4. T3 writers Michael Ferris and John D. Brancato are in the process of writing the script, and no director has been chosen yet.

The story will include characters John Connor and Kate Brewster, the two survivors at the end of T3. No word yet on whether Nick Stahl and Claire Danes will reprise their roles. Hey, Eddie Furlong probably needs work. A new “hero” character will be introduced as well, someone influenced by John Connor.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is an old man now, focused more on bureaucratic government policy than blowing shit up on film, so this will likely be the first Arnold-free Terminator movie. I can’t say I’m disappointed, because it was enough of a stretch in T3 to try and pass off a killer cyborg that looks like a 50 year old man, jowls, sagging skin and all.

The Halcyon Company, who bought the rights to the Terminator franchise last year, intend to create an entirely new Terminator trilogy. It appears that this new film will be the first in the trilogy.
