Scorsese's illustrious career in Hollywood has produced numerous film classics throughout the years. In the 1970s, he honed his craft alongside fellow up-and-coming directors Brian DePalma, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola. A gritty, unique method of storytelling would develop into Scorsese's signature style: gripping scenes of social and spiritual conflict within a commonly Italian-American faction, often involving tales of the brutal lives of mobsters struggling for control. Violent paths to redemption are common themes in his films.
In addition to his film achievements, Scorsese is known for the relationships he has built over the years with a number of Hollywood's leading actors. He first directed Robert DeNiro in Mean Streets (1973), and the two developed a close friendship. Three years later, they reuinited for Taxi Driver, a gripping tale of a New York cab driver's slow spiral down into psychosis. The film would go on to earn four Academy Award nominations and solidify DeNiro as a bankable star. Scorsese and DeNiro would go on to make a total of eight fillms together, many of which are heralded as top classics of their time (Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino) .
The acclaimed director has frequently collaborated with actors Harvey Keitel, Joe Pesci and, in recent years, Leonardo DiCaprio. His last worked with DiCaprio on the 1994 film The Aviator, which received a record eleven Academy Award Nominations. The film won five, as well as three Golden Globes. The two are said to be planning another collaboration in 2008 with The Rise Of Theodore Roosevelt.
