Dave Chappelle's Block Party
What do you get when you put Comic Dave Chappelle, Academy Award winning Director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind) and a melting pot of Hip-Hop and Neo soul artists? You get the comedic documentary, Block Party. Chappelle creates a once in a lifetime Block Party with Mos Def, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Kanye West and a reunited Fugees. The musical event took place in the borough of Brooklyn in New York.
The film is in the same genre as the 1973 documentary Wattstax, which combined musical performances with stand up comedy from Richard Pryor. Michel Gondry teams up with (Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind) cinematographer Ellen Kuras, to capture the performances and private rehearsals. Block Party features all new stand-up comedy from Chappelle, as well as Dave’s trip to his Ohio hometown to give out Golden Tickets to the Party. Dave also brought the Ohio Central State University Marching band out to kick off the show.
The guests were not charged admission to the event nor did they know the lineup of the show in advance. Once there, they were treated to a once in a lifetime show featuring some of the best musical acts to come out of Philadelphia, Chicago and New York. The lineup included; Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Dead Prez, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, The Roots, Cody ChesnuTT and Big Daddy Kane. The big surprise of the night was the Fugees reunion.
Fans of Dave Chappelle as well as fans of great music will be entertained by this unique and artistic experience. Block Party hits theaters on March 3rd and was produced by Rouge Pictures.
