40 Year old Virgin: Unrated

The 40 Year old Virgin – Unrated Version is not like some other unrated DVD’s out there. The term Unrated is grossly overused, any additional content that appears on a DVD that has not been re-submitted to the MPAA is considered unrated. So adding a trailer, music video or deleted scene could all go under the heading of, unrated content. The 40 Year Old Virgin has 17 minutes of all new footage re-inserted in to the film and tons of deleted scenes.

First of all I have to say that the audio commentary with the director and the cast is almost as funny as the film itself. Listening to the commentary also clues you in to the fact that a lot of the film came out of improvisation. One running joke that came out of the improvised takes is the oft repeated, “you know how I know you’re gay?” The audio commentary covers everything from casting to unused sub-plots in the film. The commentary also led me to a funny little film from 2001, The Chateau, starring cast members, Paul Rudd and Romanny Malco.

As far as the deleted scenes go there are a lot and not just the overused (slightly) longer takes either. Since the cast improvised so much, some of the deleted scenes look familiar but the content of the scene is different. There is also a blooper/gag reel of funny outtakes that includes a lot of footage from the “date-a-palooza” scene.

The 133 minute Unrated version has some new scenes that really fit in to the film. The new scenes fit so well that I had to check the commentary track to know which ones were new. All in all the longer version does not run out of steam.
