Mark Wahlberg Fighting for ‘The Fighter 2′

‘The Fighter 2: Blue Cake Boogaloo’ will follow Micky Ward through his trilogy of fights with Arturo Gatti.

$93 million and two Oscars later, The Fighter just keeps on fighting. Mark Wahlberg is talking about ‘taking one more run’ at the story of ‘Irish’ Micky Ward, who after uniting his family in the events of the first film then found himself in an epic series of fights with Arturo Gatti. That trilogy of fights – the first and third of which would end up being Ring Magazine’s Fight of the Year – would be the crux of the sequel, which Wahlberg assures Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive interview would be ‘one more,’ not ‘five or six Fighters like Rocky.’

We can imagine another Fighter being a good movie – Rocky 2 wasn’t bad – but we regret Wahlberg’s decision not to let the potential franchise fly off the rails. Micky Ward could defend America’s honor from a Light Welterweight champion from North Korea, or face off with Shea Neary’s brother, who takes Las Vegas hostage in an elaborate revenge scheme against the man who defeated his brother in combat.

Or hell, we all know where this is going… The Fighter in Space. Tell us you wouldn’t pay to see that. Go on, we dare you.

Wahlberg says in the interview – which we recommended reading in its entirety because it’s a damned interesting conversation – that he expects the rest of the cast to return for the sequel if it gets up and running. ‘Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can’t imagine they wouldn’t want to go back. But it’s still kind of in the early stages.’

Crave Online will return with more The Fighter 2 news as it gets lost in New York.
