Yes, it seems that everyone really does hate The Last Airbender, not just audiences, critics and fans of the show… although we guess that’s just about everyone. The 31st Annual Razzie Awards were handed out this weekend and M. Night Shyamalan’s bizarrely joyless and unfaithful adaptation of Nickelodeon’s incredible animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender practically swept the awards with five ‘wins,’ for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor (Jackson Rathbone, who also lost/won for Twilight Saga: Eclipse) and Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3D. Sex & The City 2 also took home a bunch of Razzie Awards for Worst Sequel, Worst Screen Ensemble, and Worst Actress, which ironically also went to the entire ensemble cast.
Like the Academy Awards, the Razzies are not exactly famous for their objectivity, and often seem to pounce on bigger movies in order to make a statement… usually that Hollywood blockbusters suck. The Last Airbender was an extremely bad movie, but not quite so bad as other 2010 releases such as Jonah Hex, When In Rome, Twelve, and of course Clash of the Titans, which in this critic’s opinion is an early frontrunner for Worst Film of the Decade.
