David O. Russell may have given up on Uncharted, the upcoming summer blockbuster movie version of the hit PlayStation 3 videogame, but he's not giving up on mainstream Hollywood. The Oscar-nominated director of The Fighter has now been named as a directing candidate for Maleficent, the live-action retelling of Disney's Sleeping Beauty told from the perspective of the evil fairy.
If you just heard a popping sound, that's because your mind was just blown.
Russell is an odd choice for any major Hollywood production, with his freewheeling directing style and history of on-set squabbles. He left Uncharted for those ever-present 'creative differences,' which supposedly had a lot to do with Russell developing the movie the way he wanted to, ignoring any fealty to the game. We're surprised that Disney, which is notoriously protective of their properties, would put him in the director's chair. Hollywood Reporter does clarify that David O. Russell is but one of the directors being considered, but the fact that he's up there at all is one weird mamma jamma.
Angelina Jolie is still attached to the star as Maleficent. The director's chair was recently vacated by Tim Burton, leaving room for all kinds of unexpected filmmakers to replace him. What, Disney? Was David Lynch at a family reunion? Was Jan Svankmeyer doing his hair? Why not Kevin Smith while you're at it.
We live in weird times.
Crave Online will be back with more Maleficent news once we figure out what those pointy things on her head are for.
