Jamie Foxx IS ‘Django Unchained!’

The star of Ray and Bootie Call in negotiations to take in the lead in Quentin Taratino's revisionist western.

As previously reported, Jamie Foxx is Quentin Tarantino's new choice to play the lead role in Django Unchained, the director's upcoming western about bounty hunting and slavery. While Tarantino had originally wanted Will Smith as his title character, negotiations quickly fell through, leaving room for Foxx and, according to Deadline, both Idris Elba (Thor) and Chris Tucker (Jackie Brown) to try to fill the position. It was Foxx, however, who has officially entered into negotiations to take the part in what is expected to be one badass new movie.

Deadline describes the Foxx's role as that of a free slave turned bounty hunter under the tutelage of Christoph Waltz, a German former dentist. Django's mission is to free his wife from the villainous Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), who runs a wretched hive of scum and villainy called 'Candyland,' in which slave women are treated as prostitutes and slave men are pitted against each other in gladiatorial fights to the death.

Foxx is an excellent choice for the role, having proved his dramatic chops after an early comedic career in In Living Color, Booty Call and The Great White Hype. His breakout dramatic role came in 1999's Any Given Sunday, but it wasn't until the one-two punch of Collateral and Ray in 2004 that he earned his legitimacy, and two Oscar nominations to boot. Since then he's waffled between serious roles in Miami Vice and Jarhead along with more 'Hollywood' fare like Stealth and Due Date. But question remains whether Django Unchained will prove one of Tarantino's Oscar-friendly productions like Inglourious Basterds, or one of his cultier flicks like Grindhouse or Kill Bill.
