Paul Reubens Gives Update on New 'Pee-Wee Herman' Movie

What is the project's status, and what does Judd Apatow bring to the film?

We may not have heard any news in a while, but Paul Reubens is still on track to make the first Pee-Wee Herman movie since 1988's Big Top Pee-Wee. While the comedian has been busy with his stage show lately, he just revealed to Hollywood Reporter that a new draft has just been delivered to Judd Apatow.

"Paul Rust and I just turned in a draft to Judd [Apatow] last week. He’s bringing such an interesting side to it. He’s constantly having us talk about and address the emotional core of Pee-wee Herman. It’s adding a dimension I never had before. Judd, if you’re reading this, I think it’s ready to green light!"

In an age of remakes, reboots, retreads and just plain old-fashioned repeats, projects like the new Pee-Wee Herman Movie and Jason Segel's upcoming The Muppets actually seem worthy of interest, if not outright excitement. That Judd Apatow isn't interested in just making a Pee-Wee Herman movie for its own sake, and instead wants to actually get at the core of the character who captured the hearts of a generation, has us genuinely looking forward to it.
