New Akira Kurosawa Movies?!

Splendent Media acquires the rights to 69 Akira Kurosawa movies, including 19 unproduced screenplays.

Sakiko Yamada's new production company Splendent Media made a name for itself today as the new rights holder for 69 Akira Kurosawa movies (outside of Japan). Splendent Media has only one production under its belt to date, Wild Salome, directed by Al Pacino and starring both Pacino and Tree of Life's Jessica Chastain. We suppose that some kind of Kurosawa-related production is likely to come next, although Variety reports that Sakiko Yamada's company will also act as a sales agent for other companies seeking remake rights.

The Kurosawa films now owned by Splendent Media do not include such classics as Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Drunken Angel and High and Low (the rights to which have already been scooped up by other companies), but a full list of titles is available on their website which includes such prominent titles as Stray Dog, Rashomon, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Redbeard, Dersu Uzala, Kagemusha and Ran. In addition to the films directed and written by Akira Kurosawa, Splendent Media now owns the rights to 19 unproduced screenplays by the iconic director, with titles like Runaway Train and The Black Masque of Death. So in addition to seeing a number of Kurosawa remakes spring from this deal, there's also a chance of seeing new projects based on original screenplays from one of the greatest directors who ever lived.

CraveOnline will be back with more Akira Kurosawa news as soon as we get our pitch for a Hidden Fortress re-imagining typed up. The twist? It takes place in space.

What? What do you mean it's already been done? Was it popular?

Oh… It was Star Wars. Never mind.
