Michael Fassbender Wanted for ‘Robocop’ Remake

We'd buy that for a dollar. Is… Is he asking for a dollar?

That Robocop remake is still happening, isn't it? Sigh… Oh well. At least the casting rumors are improving. When last we heard from the production, MGM wanted Star Trek's Chris Pine for the title role. We like the guy, but we also don't think anybody heard that story and said to themselves, "Yeah, that's the guy they need." That's about to change, though, because new Robocop director Jose Padilha recently said that one of his top picks for the role is none other than Magneto himself, Michael Fassbender.

Slow clap, everybody. Slow clap.

Bleeding Cool got the news straight from Jose Padilha's mouth, although they had to translate it from a Portuguese interview with Brazilian television station Globo 1. Quoth the Padilha: "I can’t talk yet, it’s too early to speak, but there are some actors I like. I really like the Fassbender, I’d like to talk to him — I’ll talk to him. There’s a possibility… and there’s a lot of other great actors that would play Robocop. But that’s the idea, to film around January, February, March."

We love Michael Fassbender, and his career is definitely on the uptick after stealing the show in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. He'll soon be appearing in Steven Soderbergh's first hardcore action movie Haywire, and will kick some alien ass in Ridley Scott's Alien prequel Prometheus. And of course he's segueing into Oscar territory with his performance as Carl Jung in David Cronenberg's upcoming Sigismund Freud biopic (yes, that's how it's really spelled) A Dangerous Method, opposite Viggo Mortensen. Unlike Pine, whose boyish good looks might work against the solidified family man dynamic of the original character, Fassbender carries himself like a man with some years behind him. And of course he's a great actor too. Good choice, Mr. Padilha.

CraveOnline will return with more Robocop news after we test drive the new 2012 SUX.
