‘Harry Potter’ DVDs and Blu-Rays Going Out of Print!

If you haven't already (really?), buy 'em before December 29th or prices could skyrocket.

Out of print DVDs and Blu-Rays can be big business (less so for Blu-Rays, since the medium is newer and fewer titles have lapsed). There was a time when a Criterion Edition of Salo, for example, could run you hundreds of dollars at secondhand retailers or on eBay. Usually the rights to a title change, or the edition goes out of print due to lack of demand, but not so in the case of the Harry Potter series. Warner Bros. is taking them off the market entirely as of December 29th just to drive up demand.

They haven't said as much, naturally, but there's no other reason to stop making one of the most popular film franchises in history available to retailers. Hollywood Reporter reported, from Hollywood (natch), that Warner Bros. is taking every film – and every edition of every film – in the Harry Potter series off the market at the end of December. That includes the last film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, which isn't even out yet, giving the film less than two months of availability before it's taken off the market.

This is actually standard practice for Disney, which consistently puts their classic films "back in the vault" so they can re-release them a few years later and make a big event out of it. Dumbo is always available? You can take that for granted. Dumbo is finally available for the first time in years? "Dude, we gotta buy that!" Presumably Warner Bros. will re-release the entire series in brand new editions somewhere down the line. We'd be surprised if we don't hear about it in less than year.

CraveOnline will be back with more Harry Potter news after we load up our shopping cart at Amazon.
