Kenneth Branagh Will Direct the Next Jack Ryan Film

The Thor director will take the reins on Chris Pine's oft-delayed reboot of the Tom Clancy franchise.

There's finally been some movement on Paramount's long-planned reboot of Tom Clancy's popular Jack Ryan franchise. The film recently lost its original director, acclaimed TV director Jack Bender ("The Sopranos," "Lost"), but Paramount has been quick to find a replacement in the form of Kenneth Branagh, whose first bona fide blockbuster, Marvel's Thor, turned out to be an enormous success.

At the time, Branagh – previously best known for his Shakespearean films, like Hamlet, Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing – seemed like an unexpected choice for an action epic, but it appears that he's caught the action bug. Variety reports that he'll direct the still-untitled fifth film in the successful franchise, which has recently been rewritten by David Koepp (Spider-Man, Jurassic Park).

Somehow we have high hopes for this latest installment, despite knowing little of the plot. The Jack Ryan movies have actually been of the most consistently entertaining motion picture series in recent decades, with each film being more or less solid, thrilling motion pictures, from The Hunt to Red October right through to the better-than-you-think-it-is The Sum of All Fears, Paramount's last attempt to reboot the franchise with a younger, supposedly popular star. Ben Affleck's acting career didn't quite take off the way anyone expected it too (although his directing career is going like gangbusters), and frankly we're concerned that the same thing might happen to This Means War star Chris Pine, but time will tell.

CraveOnline will return with more Jack Ryan news after we get over our fear of flying.
